Deadpool Spatula

Deadpool Spatula

So back in 2015 I made the Batula (Batman Spatula) and it was a fun project. At the time I had planned to make a Deadpool one on my CNC as a thank you to Marc Spagnuolo for featuring the project on his Facebook page. But my CNC broke down and the project died along with it. Since I recently bought a scroll saw and needed a first project, I decided to revive Wade and give it a go. Only this time, there would be no computer to guide the cut.

deadpool22

I started with three pieces of hardwood. Hard maple, black walnut and bloodwood. I planed then down on my thickness planer to just over 1/4 thick.

deadpool01

The design for this project was inspired by these magnets from the  ScrollSawScribbler who is artist I follow on Instagram. ( I would recommend you do the same)

Scroll Saw Scribbler

Next I started searching for a logo that I can use. Now, I do not own the rights to Deadpool, so I am not comfortable sharing the template that I made here and raising any lawyers ire (sorry)! But I did cut out three copies and adhered it to the wood with spray adhesive.

deadpool02

deadpool03
Since the maple piece didn’t have any inside cuts and I am a LOT more comfortable with the band saw, I cut it out there.

deadpool04

Next I covered the pieces with packing tape, which I’ve been told helps to lubricate the scroll saw blade while cutting. After that I chucked a 1/16″ twist bit in my drill press and made holes for the inside cut outs.

deadpool05

deadpool06

Now, I’m a scroll saw novice, in fact this is my first project. I picked up this 16 Craftsman Scroll Saw from Craigslist using my RSS method. It’s an entry level croll saw, but with the right blades and a foot pedal it seems more than up to the task.

deadpool07

Take your time and follow the line. Woodworking is not a gift, it is a skill, and skills come from doing, so the more you use the scroll saw the better you will become! (Yes that was a bit of self affirmations, ‘You’re good enough, you’re smart enough…”)

deadpool09

I cut on the waste side of the line so, I could then use my sander to get a more exact fit.

deadpool10

After all the pieces where cut, they didn’t fit perfectly, but with a little bit of sanding here and there I was able to coax the two half faces into the bloodwood logo and glued them in place.

deadpool12

deadpool11

After that I was time to glue the logo and one sword half down the maple backer piece. I took special care not to get any squeeze out into the eyes or sword diamonds!

deadpool14

deadpool15

Now on to the spatula. I picked this up from my local dollar store. Freeing the handle from the blade is as easy as knocking out the aluminum pins with a awl and hammer.

batman00

After that I take it to my bench grinder and remove all the excess from the outside. basically anything that would show around my handle. Since it’s just for spreading, removing some of the tang will not impact it’s use at all.

deadpool16

Next I use my Dremel with a cut off wheel to remove the inside portions. This way once it is epoxied in place, it will not be visible in the diamond cutouts.

deadpool17

deadpool18

I then simply epoxied it in place.

deadpool20

Once dried I clean up the face on the belt sander and leveled out any areas that were out of plane.

deadpool21

Right off the sander it is actually looking quite well! Still I would recommend sanding it by hand up to 400 grit or so. This only took about 45 minutes and it is well worth the effort.

deadpool22

For a finish I went with three coats of a water based wipe on poly. That or a lacquer is a good choice for anything that will end up in a kitchen drawer!

deadpool23

And that’s all. Thanks for looking!

  7. Crazy awesome as always! Love the work you do, Peter. I just don’t know what you would call this one.. Dead pool-a? Dead Spatoola? Sp-dead pool-a?… I don’t know! It doesn’t matter anyway, all that matters is that awesome 😀

  8. Hey Peter, I’m Niamh, I’m a 19 year old female from Ireland, I love watching your videos, I completed7 years of woodworking and construction and would love to go on further and some day have a shop like yours. There is just something about being able to craft beautiful things out of the natural beauty of wood.

  9. This was definitely a fun build to watch! I have some Deadpool fridge magnets that are crying out for…something witty in reference to the spatula…

  10. Hello, I really enjoy your YouTube channel. I have enjoyed wood working since I was old enough reach the power swith on the old shopsmith. I hope you keep making cool projects!

  11. This looks fantastic. The Only constructive criticism I have would to be to try to sharpen the edges on the sword handle cuts. I’d live to see you make a real knife 🙂 that would be a really cool video.

  12. Woohoo! First comment so I probably won’t win, but it’s worth a shot. I’ve been following you for about a year now. My dad is a contractor and I have fond memories associated with the sound of saws….. and the smell of burning wood. Strange, I know, so it’s always strangely nostalgic watching your videos 😉 I’ve always wanted to purchase a piece of work by you but I know you don’t sell your projects. Honestly this deadpool spatula (dead-ula??? Lol) would be an incredible piece for my apartment when I move out for college in May 😀 love your videos!!

  13. Hey looks like im the 1st to comment by the way love your videos makes me want get into wood turning
keep up the good work From a UK Viewier

  16. Deadpool spatula = best kind of spatula! My favorite projects are definitely all of the nerdy ones — like everything in this “You May Also Like” section (though I’m itching to call the “Flash Wall Light” just a flashlight and confuse people).

  17. Yo that looks awesome ^^ if I win that would be a surprise for me but, don’t knock it unless you try right. ^^ I would make I deadpool cake if I had the time. #work am I right *giggles*

  18. This is really cool. I love your work and you kindof inspired me in school and soon I’ll be taking the woodworking project again.
    Thanks.
I hope I get the dead pool spatula.

    1. He mentioned in his living hinge video that it was a Craftsman w/ a foot pedal, but I can’t remember hearing what model.

  19. I’ve been a fan for almost a year now and have always dreamed of owning one of your products and it would be the best thing ever if I won this and congrats on close to 200,000 subs on youtube

  20. I love to bake cakes, I love dead pool, and funny enough the movie comes out on my birthday haha. Hope I get the pallet knife.

  21. Nice; so for a scroll saw newbie question; what made you select that particular blade (I think you said it was a number 5 reverse tooth) or was it a recommendation from someone else?

Also that knob seems to really do its job well – much easier than pulling out allen keys 🙂

  22. I love this build and I love dead pool. This is probably one of my favorite builds that you’ve done since the sprinkles cake stand. Keep doing what you’re doing and stay awesome.

  23. I started watching your videos, because they relax me in a way my great grand father , was a woodworker, and I still remember siting in the basement watching him, make beautiful bowls. Brings back some good memories. Thank you for putting up videos.

  24. This project is awesome! I have no wood working experience (besides a little slingshot I made) but I might make a simpler design spatula for my dad. It would also be cool to win one since I couldn’t make anything so intricate with my current tools!

  25. Hi i would love to win it as a birthday present. (my birthday is on the 28th) i would extremly appreciate it if i won.

  26. Been watching your videos for a while. While I have no electric tools I do tend to try to build all I can by hand. You’re quirky and your sense of humor is freakin awesome. Keep up all the hard work.

  27. This is kinda really frippin amazing, and I need 40. Seriously though, I wish I could make one just to make deadpool cakes with or to threaten my friends with while wearing a deadpool mask and chef hat.

  28. Being that I love both deadpool and cooking id love this in my arsenal of weapo…I mean cookware yeah thats what I mean

  29. I want this so bad and it would look really cool. I bake cakes all the time and actually need a new spatula. This would be sweet if I won!

  30. This was a super cool project! Your YouTube channel is my new favorite! My hubby would love this Spatula! Deadpool is his favorite!

  31. This is incredibly awesome. I would definitely use it for cakes. I’ve actually made a deadpool cake before. Though it was deadpool in a dodgers uniform for a very specific birthday. Heh

  32. Hey, awesome build, you should do all the marvel superheroes and do a spatula pack give away haha. Can’t wait for the next episode of shop time!

  33. This looks awesome! Plus I’m trying to get into cooking so this looks like a great addition to my non-existent cooking arsenal…

  34. Oh oh oh pick me pick me!! I love deadpool…and cooking…and wood work. Hum I’d really love to have it.

  35. I love your work! You’re the reason that I decided to start woodturning and woodworking. The amazing projects and tricks you do inspires me to work harder and put more effort into my own projects so that I may enhance my skills just as you have. I’m 16 and only been woodworking for about 3 years and have been woodturning less than that, but I feel as though I have been able to better the quality of my work by watching your successes and failures over the last few years. Thank you so much! Please never stop creating!

  36. This, like everything else I have seen you make, is awesome! I’ve been really wanting to get into wood working and seeing all the cool things you come up with makes me want to even more. I’ve been slowly acquiring tools so hopefully soon I’ll be able to try it out. I really enjoy your channel. Keep up the good work!

  37. I would love to do something like this in the future, but it will probably look like something out of a dumpster.😑😂

  38. Commenting to enter the contest. I love your videos. I’ve been a fan for awhile. You make great videos. Much love from the bay area!

  39. Your projects make me want to go and start using all the wood working tools of my grandfather’s that are out in the shed

  40. Chimichangas! If I win I’m gonna eBay it and give the money to Make-A-Wish via Steve Ramsey.
Or buy a copy of Deadpool #1 – whatever!

  55. Nice job on the Deadpool spatula, Mr. Brown! My anniversary with my boyfriend is February 12th, so I’m taking him to see the movie as our date! Wade is his favorite “superhero”. I’m using the term extremely loosely here 😉

  56. You always make amazing and unique creations, I always love and enjoy watching your videos. Keep up the fantastic work, you’re the best.

  57. WHOOO-HOOOOOOO!!!!! I love all of your unique idea’s. It’s cool that you show the tries and failures along with your successes. It’s real. Thanks for the opportunity to own one of your works of art from the shop.

  58. Hey! Hopped over here from your youtube channel, via your video on the deadpool spatula! I thought it was a really neat idea to like make your own spatula. 59. Im going to see it opening weekend and im so hyped for it. The project turned out fantastic and the multiple uses of wood just make it look badass!

  60. you know in high school I took a sewing class and on the first day everyone was expressing their concerns over how hard using the machine was going to be I piped up with “oh it can be that hard, a sewing machine is just like a scroll saw!” I didn’t understand at the time why I got such funny looks.

  61. Batula is best spatula.

I really enjoy watching your woodworking videos. I used to do woodworking a couple years ago in high school and I have missed it so much since. I live in an apartment and have no access to the machinery that is required. Being able to create something out of raw materials brings a satisfaction to my heart, and being able to see someone as nice you create things makes me smile every time.

  62. Nice project! I always loved using a scroll saw cause its nice for electronics projects.

  63. Sweeeeeeeeet! Hope I win, I will display the chimichanga slicer in all it’s glory right next to my Ron Swanson cutting board!

  75. This is absolutely fantastic to see. It looks beautiful and making it in time for the movie is crazy awesome! Hopefully the movie will be awesome as well (though I have no doubts). Never replace the bat-ula. It’s too wonderful.

  76. I have a Deadpool wallet, watch, few shirts, clock. Now all I need is a Deadpool spatula! Awesome design with the different colored wood btw 🙂

  77. I totally love this idea. I just got myself a scroll saw as well and I think I might have to try and make my wife a wonder woman spatula! I really enjoy all your videos, keep up the great work.

  78. I love the build! I actually cook stuff on the stove a lot, and we’re a bit low on useful appliances. I’m a good fan of Deadpool, and my sister is god damned crazy for it. I really just like your YouTube channel in general. Keep it up 🙂

  79. I’m a massive fan of both your website and YouTube channels and have been since your wooden Chakram build. Keep on keepin’ on.

  81. I’m a huge fan of Deadpool and have recently become a fan of you; I’d love to have this spatula for whipping up some pancakes like Mr. Wade Wilson himself….though not nearly as many. haha

  89. This project was awesome, man! I’d like to see what other kinds of designs you can do with this new machine of yours. A list of possibilities just opened up!

  90. Great project! I love deadpool and woodworking, since my father is a woodworker too. I hope I win this contest because I love baking as well and would Bake a deadpool cake immediatly 🙂
    Greetings from germany!

  91. It’s funny you mentioned people referring to it as a pallet knife, I’ve been a cake decorator for about six years and that’s the first thing I thought of when I saw it. It would be such an awesome tool to add to my decorating set 🙂 I can’t say I do much wood working but I love watching your videos! Keep up the great work 🙂

  92. Hey Peter,
This spatula is awesome and I love Deadpool, and as I am a bit of a baker myself if I did win it I think I would use your idea to make a Deadpool cake 😀

  93. DeadPool is probably my favourite “superhero” character mostly because, he’s not a good guy but he’s also not a bad guy. He kills for money, sometimes he kills evil people, sometimes good people it all depends on who pays him!

  94. Oh, Peter, that is LOVELY work! I want in on the auto-drawing! My son would really like this, so I’d obviously have to keep it myself and make him green with envy!! LOL
    Thanks man!

  95. This is pretty awesome. I have had my scroll saw for probably a few years now and havent used it in probably that many. This makes me want to use it again. Keep the awesome videos coming.

  96. Hey, I enjoy all of your videos. Especially the nerdy stuff like the fallout light, the Mario mushroom birdhouse and the “batula”. I’d love to win the deadpool spatula. You do great work and make awesome art. Keep up the good work!

  97. This reallymakes me want to get into woodworking 🙂 lasercutter would be extremely convenient for this project 🙂

  98. I love the build. Can’t wait to see the new mivue although ive never really dug deep into deadpool. He looks like deathstroke which is my favorite character in Injustice and I really like his design

  99. I like this spatula as well as the batula. I would like to have both in my kitchen. Also, I never knew you had this website. I just follow you on YouTube. I will be checking back here often. You do great work.

  100. I really love deadpool he’s so funny and ryan Reynolds the actor who plays him started acting the same year that deadpool came out. I know that i probaly wont win but it’s nice to be entered I’ve been wacthing your channel for about two years now.

  101. This spatula looks amazing! I loved when you made the Batman spatula a while back, but this is a step up since Deadpool is my all time favorite character! It’s really cool of you to be giving away such a neat piece.

  102. Love this spatula, totally want it. I’d decorate the coolest Deadpool cake with it and make the most delicious Deadpool pancakes. Also love your channel and videos keep up the great work!

  103. I’m not just here for the giveaway I had a question too. I had some epoxys that are in the squeeze tubes and they were very hard to get out of the tube, would the warm water bath work on them too?

  104. I want one of theese so much i love deadpool and i cant wait for the new movie i saw the trailer and i couldnt stop laughing, nice job on this project its amazing keep up the good work sir

  105. This is fantastic.

And now, I have to say thank you. I found your video of the colored pencil ring uhm…. a while ago. Not sure how long now really. Since then I have become absolutely obsessed with watching wood turning videos and “making” videos on YouTube. Thru you I found Jimmy Diresta, Carl Jacobson, and a couple others (that I forgot their names, because I suck at names). I watch this lovely older gentleman at 54a make delightful bowls, another nice man make pens upon pens, and every time you post, something wonderfully nerdy. I have never commented on your videos, I rarely click like (sorry! I’m spamming videos!!) but I appreciate what you do on YouTube. So thank you for making that ring. (PS I ADORE Mr. Wilson, and I hope I win, but most of all, I wanted to be able to thank you. My girlfriend (I think) hates you a little tho. Did I mention “obsessed with wood working videos”? XD )

So thanks, and keep up the nerdy shit, yeah?

  106. This was a really cool project, I would have added a material in the eyes and the diamonds for a flush finish but to each his/her own. Plus I am living in an apartment so the range of my tools are essentially a vice, knife, and dremel so I appreciate that other people out there share cool projects like this.

  107. I really enjoy watching your videos. I have only gotten into woodworking in the last two years after my father passed away and I inherited his collection of tools.

It’s cool how you combine woodworking and other interests to make awesome projects that are unique

  108. This is amazing! My husband is a huge fan of both Deadpool and yourself, and I feel like this might be the tool I need to convince him to spend some time in the kitchen lol! Fantastic work!!

  109. I have a dead pool metal plate that when use to cool hamburgers is makes them look like dead pool I would love this spatula

  110. So I have wanted to make the drunken cutting board project for a long while now but in my area of New England, I cannot seem to find the wood you used on the project. If you know anywhere in the New England area to get anything similar to the dark oak that would be amazing.

    Thanks You

Also nice job on the spatula 😛

  111. How do you think it would look of it were encased in resin and then finished to a shine? I think it’d look cool.

  112. Hey Peter I just wanted to say that I love your videos and I’m also a huge despoil fan so you making a deadpan project is so cool!

  113. Your scroll saw work was better in this than your living hinge already. This as with all your projects turned out very nice.

  114. Hey Peter!
Just wanted to say that I loved the spatula video. Your creativity inspires me (and I really mean it)!

    Thanks,
    Noah

  115. I love watching your videos. I really enjoy watching you make cool bracelets out of weird stuff. I think that the Deadpool Spatula is a brilliant idea and I would love to win it 😀

  116. Huge fan! Even if I don’t win, I just need to let you know, one man to another, I love you in a strictly platonic sorta way

  117. I love watching you make things. I really wish that I had a place that I could do some wood working. It has always interested me and I was dissapointed when I found out that my wood working class in high school was a joke. We never even went into the shop. I hope that I get this so I can give it to my boyfriend.

  118. I’m a chef and a gamer that thoraly enjoys all the cooking utensils you publish. I would love to pull this out of my drawer when I make burgers.

I’m a 14 year old male from North Carolina, and I’m a huge fan!

  119. My family thinks I’m crazy for watching woodworking and other crafting videos but there is something just so relaxing about them! Haha

  120. Hey, I really like your videos. My grandparents make cabinets for a living, so I’ve always grown up around woodwork, but I really like everything else on your channel, too! Can’t wait for Deadpool to come out!

  121. I love seeing your projects! It always makes me want to start wood working. Unfortunately, both my dad and I are banned from power tools at the moment. I’ll give my mom a month to cool down.

  122. Why, hello Peter! I know you probably won’t read this since the giveaway is random, but just in case, I would like to tell you that your channel has really helped me with certain things and I find it fascinating to watch you make things! If I do win this, I promise not to let my cats and/or dogs chew on!

  123. Literally an amazing piece and while I’m no woodworker, this design is hilariously inspiring! Such a generous giveaway ☺

  124. Watching your videos has made me far more interested in trying to do wood working of my own. Thanks for the awesome videos! I’ve been hyped for the deadpool movie since xmen origins so seeing you make that spatula is awesome

  126. You’re videos are no doubt easy to understand and with the same tools would be easy to re-create. The instructions are clear and I feel that you deserve 5x as more subscribers than you do now. I hope to see more videos in the future and I will feel honored if I am able to receive a hand crafted Deadpool spatchula masterpiece.

  136. Wow! A project done without a CNC machine? Ha! Very cool project. Giving me the itch to try something like this with a coping saw. Maybe you should have dipped your CNC machine in epoxy before getting rid of it!

  137. So I’m from YouTube, and I just wanted to say that your kinda like the dad I never had, I always wanted to help in the shop but of course my brother was top pick because, well favorites were played. Learning all this stuff, watching you build is the absolute best. Coming from a girl that lives and breathes makeup, watching you craft all This cool stuff is my favorite thing. Makes me want to run to Home Depot and lowes and see what crazy shit I can make out of everyday shop items.

  138. I love your videos! They have inspired me with so many fantastic ideas that I have been journaling for when I finally get my garage. Keep up the fantastic work and I look forward to your next project.

  139. I love Deadpool and not just cause Ryan is so mouthy!
